LITTLETON, Colorado (AP) -- A dentist found the source of the toothache Patrick Lawler was complaining about on the roof of his mouth -- a four-inch (10-centimeter) nail the construction worker had unknowingly embedded in his skull six days earlier.

I don't see how he could've not felt the impact or feel any pain when it happened. Must not be a lot of nerves in that area. Or it was just so quick and fast.

Wouldn't he have had sinus problems?

That makes me cringe..ah..I would freak out if I found out that there was a nail shoved up the roof of my mouth into my skull.

Honestly...how can you not know you lodged a nail into your face?

There was a guy who had a nail in his head for a few years without knowing it. Shot himself with a nail gun and apparently didn't feel it. Twas in Guiness World Records.

It looks like it had to have entered from his mouth... How could you do that on accident?

I can imagine it. Well, maybe not imagine it, but believe it. Despite the fact that it looks like it would hurt like hell, it's totally in the realms of reality. I mean, this has happened numerous times.

I don't know if any of you have seen this, but there was this thing on tv where an old lady got stabbed in the back of the neck at a store, but didn't know or feel it, and she was just walking around with the knife there the whole time. It wasn't till she got home and her daugther saw it and pulled it out that she felt it there. I guess these things happen. Also, whenever you get a cut, but it doesn't hurt till you see it, must be similar to this.

Actually, you would not need to be intoxicated. An object such as a nail or a knife does not really cover much space. If the nail was driven into your body fast enough, it would just pass through the skin, and it would feel like someone just hit you in the face. There would be virtually no sign of penetration, if something penetrated you at such a high velocity, and you just might not notice it.
There are hundreds of cases of medical tools being left inside patients every year. I know that is totally different then being impalled with a sharp object, but having a piece of metal lodged someplace in your body is not an uncommon thing.

I had a slab of wood stuck in my finger. Like a gigantic splinter parallel to the bone. My skin healed around it and after a few years I didn't even feel it anymore.

I think its pretty obvious that we all jam them into our raw flesh at high speeds than leave it inn there.

Wait a tick........why don't you just get the lead removed from you?
And it can't be "lead." Lead is highly toxic. Pencils have been made out of graphite for a while now.

i think we all know that it is not actually "lead" but it is pencil lead... very few people walk around saying "i need some more graphite for my mechanical pencil"
I haven't gotten mine removed because it doesn't bother me, it would cost money, and it makes for an interesting anecdote for quiet situations

Assuming it hasn't already been covered. Of course, people do forget things so you might be able to get away with retelling it.

One time, in 7th grade, during the first Science Club meeting, we made graphite. It was sweet.
Just... FYI...

:wtf: You all have pencil points in your hands?
And about the nail.... Argh I can't believe that didn't hurt.
"Oh yeah that's true, I shot a nail in my mouth a few days ago. Totally forgot about it!"
