You MUST be kidding...
Angrist, are you sure you shouldn't reconsider playing the game if you're worried about gore? I mean, how much can the lack of polygonal blood change the scope of the game for you? You're still killing people/zombies.

So in a time when people were saying the survival horror genre was becoming quite a bit thin (well, I don't agree but I've heard many people say that), IGN calls RE4 the "Best Survival Horror game ever made"? Brilliant!

Okay, so I want to play this game, but I've never (fully) played any other RE, and with the control scheme they have (much less the save system, ugh) I probably never will.
But I have to have the games stories, or I will feel completely wrong when playing RE4 (never mind if it'll make sense or not; it just will feel wrong [my mom thinks I'm obssesive compulsive]). So, I thought, "I could read the novels!" But I didn't want to go and spend money on them (and distract me from other, better stuff) if they absolutely sucked or had nothing to do with the games.
So what I'm asking is, are the novels worth it? Would I be able to read those instead of playing the games, and still get the whole story? Or are they poo? Are they worth buying, or will a library work (I've actually seen them there...)?

ps2 version = sux
Series creator Shinji Mikami isn't happy with the PS2 port for RE4 and by the sounds of things his discontent is only the beginning of Capcoms woes.
The creator of the Resident Evil series, Mr. Shinji Mikami, is said to be extremely disheartened and annoyed with the decision to port Resident Evil 4 to the PlayStation 2, a game which, for a long period of time, was meant to be an exclusive title for the GameCube. Mikami in fact has said that he will take no part in the PS2 version and will take up his new position at Clover Studios once the GameCube version is completed.
It has also been confirmed somewhat that the reason behind the port of RE4 was not due to them, "listening to the voices of gamers across the world." Rather, as expected, it was because of the Capcom board wanting to increase company stock value. A decision echoed by feelings in the Capcom ranks that the development teams are loosing their voice and too many decisions are being made by executives or as they say, the men up top who have very little, or no dealings, with the work at ground level.
It appears that Mikami hurrying up his departure from the RE team is only the tip of the iceberg. Many other experienced staff at Capcom are set to leave the company once Resident Evil 4 is finished development, including ex-big wig himself, Mr. Okamoto.
Simply put the question needs to be asked, "Is Capcom becoming to greedy?"
Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube is currently set to hit North American retail on January 11.

9.6 from Gamespot...

I'm hoping to pick up a copy tomorrow... If the stores get it in yet... But I just started playing MGS3 so >_<
OH and another thing, the reviews make the gameplay sound great, but they also make it sound like they turned the game into a crazy action game and threw the story out the window aside from a short cutscene here and there to keep things on track...
Which could be either a good or a bad thing, I guess I'll have to play it to decide which... *strokes beard*

Uh... Well...
Let's see, I've played 1 & 2, watched someone beat three and zero, and played most of Code Veronica. I think you might just want to read a story FAQ or something like that, to maybe get the generalized idea of the story and junk. You probably wont get some of the little things in the game, some of the connections. Oh well.

I have about 3 and a half hours of play time on the clock...
First off there's a nice little (brief) recap of the major events of RE1, 2, and 3 at the beginning... Although it doesn't go into too much detail...
So yeah the game is good... The stiff behind the back camera took a little getting used to, but once I did it started to look quite nice...
Another thing is it just feels like you should be able to sidestep, but you can't...
The reviews made it sound like they skipped on the story in favor of the action, however to me there seems to be about as much story development throughout the game as there was in the past games... So that's a relief, I'm just still hoping for some tie-in to past RE games other than Leon and Ada's presence...
So like yeah... I'm sure IGN and Gamespot's pretty scoring system is more convincing, but like buy it and stuff...
Oh, HOT.
I played it for 6 hours straight before stopping. All I should say is, this game is well worth the money. It's so SWEETT. SWEET ASS SWEET.

That was like the most frustrating part I'd run into so far... Maybe the shotgun would be the best choice (I guess the spray would be enough to knock em off balance and over the railing), but I figured hey, rifle = best aiming in the game!... But the reload is so slow there's no way to kill them all and not get hit at least once...
Then the battle that takes place on the other side = frustrating...
But wait, you're telling me that (from your first report) you hit the 6 hour mark, but weren't even across the lift? I'm at 5 hours 2 minutes... And I'm a short ways past it...
And that's with me taking my time, being all dramatic and walking around, aiming first when I turn corners, etc because it just looks so damn cool...

I gotsd a question for you guys...
What weapons are you using? Do you buy the newer model guns (riot gun in place of shotgun, etc) or just stick with the ones you have and upgrade?
I heard people on the IGN forums talking about how much awesomer the newer models are, however up until the very end the only guns I had were:
Punisher Handgun
Plain ol' Shotgun
Plain ol' Rifle
None of which I completely maxed out...
Then right near the end of the game I bought the broken butterfly to make EZ Cheez of the various bosses...
Oh yeah and now that I think back on it, the Resident Evil 4 storyline was way totally dissapointing... IMO the thing the story in this game did best was set up for a sequel...
The story just kinda felt like "Here's some weird random crap, but we'll tease you tidbits of info that make it seem like RE5 will actually tie in to the RE storyline somehow... WELP GAME'S OVER HOPE YA HAD FUN!"

you don't have the mine thrower, blacktail (handgun) and semi auto riffle? There's a lot more too.
Yeah I know there was a lot more... But I was pressed for space (I actually completely forgot there was a second case upgrade available, so I was running on the first upgrade you can get up until the third became available near the end) and spent more of my money on upgrading my older guns rather than buying new ones and having to spend money upgrading them...
I also didn't know you could combine certain gems with other bits of treasure to up the value of the whole package...
But hey, it worked... I had plenty of handgun bullets up until the time I didn't need my punisher anymore, my shotgun was more than enough to take out mobs of enemies, my rifle of course was awesome (sniping always is) for early boss fights and a bit more, and then the magnum at the end kicked ass...
As I side note, I also got all the bottlecaps... which really wasn't that hard to do... And I annoyed my friend with them...
"Leon, now!... Leon Leon now! L L L L Leon Leon now Leon now!"
Hmm, I've just been upgrading my guns too. However, I think I could sell my upgraded shotgun and buy the Riot Rifle with pockets of change to spare. I think I will.
I got to the ......... (spoilers!)
Castle.
It's really really frustrating for some reason. But maybe it's just because I had Kahlua earlier.

However, I think it's pretty dern silly that they RUN QUITE FAST until about 5 feet in front of you where they proceed to kinda stare at you as they slowly move towards you like zombies... Sometimes they don't even walk towards you, they sorta walk around you just waiting to be shot...

Well it depends on where in the castle you are... There's a bunch of different things to do in different parts...
One thing you're supposed to do is kill things and not die... Avoid being hit by maces if possible... If an enemy picks Ashley up and starts to walk away with her, it's a great idea to pull out your handgun and shoot that sucker in the leg...

When Leon enters the first house and shows the man the picture, he says this:
¿Qué carajo estás haciendo aquí? Lárgate cabrón.
Which means:
What the f*ck are you doing here? Get the hell out of here mother f*cker.
After entering Cabin #3, villagers can be heard saying:
¡Abre la puerta!
Which means:
Open the door!
Vallan por detrás.
Which means:
Go from behind.
And of course, after the bell rings, during the cutscene, the villagers say:
La campana
Which means:
The bell
Es hora de rezar
Which means:
It's time to pray
Tenemos que irnos
Which means:
We have to go

Why do you only have the Red9? You absolutely need to have the shotgun at all times, it can get you out of pretty much any predicament. My only advice would be aim for the heads and knock the ladders down... eventually they leave, just try to stay alive for a while.

....... how would you know, there hasn't been a single screenshot of the PS2 version.
But on the other hand, we all know it won't look that nice on PS2... :)

I've been playing this game since Friday and I'm in the castle. I got a game over because I sold my rifle and I needed it to prevent Ashley from being kidnapped. I have to say one thing. Those monks are annoying little ****s. >.>

I havent had much trouble with the monks...I mean once or twice when I was defending Ashley, I would be trying to snipe a monk and one would pop up in my face right in front of the scope...in which case I would quickly switch back to Shotgun and blast that motha to smitherenes...

Never... EVER!... sell your rifle... it is just as important to the game as Ashley... ;)
If you do, get another rifle...
Like the Riot Gun or the like...

Yeah, the rifle is the only gun you NEED to have at certain points.

well... You don't actually need the rifle if you're godly with a pistol, but yea.
I did manage to beat the game with nothing but the manual rifle because I initially throught a semi-automatic gun was like a machine gun, but by the time I realized my mistake, it wasn't worth it to buy it and lose the upgrades I'd put into the basic rifle.

The old school riffle is much more fun to shoot with/recharge.
I beat the game the other day. I pretty much beat the game with the Riot gun, and the occasional normal Rifle.
I can't wait to play the things I unlocked.

Agreed...
When my friend tried to play my saved game (my second time through the game), he commented on how horrible my guns were (he owns the game too) and was wondering how the hell I beat the game with them...
Then he made me buy all the upgraded new guns...
But the rifle... It's just not as satisfying when he doesn't do his reload animation after every shot...
