I think awesome connotates the wrong idea. Mind-boggling might be more appropriate.
most of thoes dont really show how bad it was. first few the biggest difference is just the beach and the sand level in the water.
the one that really shows it is the one where theres an island which is almost completly wiped out.

Awesome is actually a pretty accurate description of those pictures. They inspire pure awe in the face of the destructive capabilities of nature. I'm in awe and those pictures are awesome.
Now "rad" would be inappropriate... that and "tubular".

Well, the wave was definately tall enough to be tubular.
...
Anywho, *eye twitches*. This pictures put it into perspective a little better for me. Numbers have crap for connotation. Pictures say so much more.

Banda Aceh is very near to the epicenter of the earthquake, hence the massive destruction. India and Sri Lanka probably only experience extreme tidal waves (800km per hour) as they are far from that spot.
Banda Aceh, I heard, experienced the real earthquake as well as the waves. I saw heaps of cracked buildings... :(
Malaysian television interviewed a local celebrity who is of Acehnese origin. She said that she has lost 50 of her family members in the disaster. I don't even know if my immediate and extended family total up to that amount...

Wow, some of the pictures of the inland territory shows that the whole area was destroyed. It's horrible that this has happened, but at the same time it's amazing how much one natural disaster can do.

The coastline being destroyed is bad, but holy crap, look at the island getting ingulfed in water.....that's scary and sad....
