View Full Version : Reputation Awareness/Evaluation Month
January is reputation awareness month! This is the time during when we all make extra efforts to give reputation to our fellow members for the posts they make. In addition you can submit feedback on the system as a whole. Below I have pasted the current reputation rules. As you can see it really is not difficult to advance in level.
I'd also like to know if you like the way the privileges are based on rep or if you would like to move to an economy- based system. The difference is you would be able to purchase privileges with your money which may include new options like sticking threads and changing username font. You would earn money through rep, but also through other factors such as replying in specific forums and gaining referrals. Basically it would require more management on your part but you would in turn have greater flexibility in determining your user options.
Reputation:
Every member has certain privileges which is based on their amount of reputation. Please note that your privileges are not based on the number of posts you’ve accumulated. The rank which appears under your name is the only thing that is post count dependent. In addition, you will gain 1 gold star for every 1000 posts up to 5000.
It’s in your best interest to build your reputation as it determines what you’re actually able to do in the forums. There are four promotional groups which you can reach by having a specific level of reputation.
P0 (registered user)
P1 Bronze (500 reputation)
P2 Silver (1000 reputation)
P3 Gold (1500 reputation)
P4 Platinum (2000 reputation)
You gain a certain # of rep points for every positive rating. The amount of points received is based on the rep power of the user who gave you the rating (default is 1). Ratings are made by clicking on the scales icon on the lower left corner of someone's post. If you receive 1 positives for 10 points each on 50 of your posts, that's 500 points of positive rep for you. This system will be tweaked based on how often people actually give ratings.
You gain one green pip for every 10 rep and a bright green pip for every 20 rep.

The value of the ratings you make will increase based on certain factors. You start with a value of 10. Admins start with a value 0f 30.
For every 182 number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
For every 1000 posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
For every 500 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
Must have 50 posts before your ratings will affect others.
Can only make 100 ratings in a 24 hour period.

Plenty of people give out -rep. I know I've given out some when I fell someone's been stupid, and have recieved some in return (and not just from people who feel they have to have an "eye-for-an-eye" thing, but only return -rep, not +rep).

I couldn't care less about the Reputation rating here. Anybody who has made enough posts to build up that meter already has a real reputation to begin with. I don't need to look at some number to figure out whether I know something about that person or not.
And the privileges? Mostly just peripherals. I suppose being able to see who left a user rating for you is nice, but the rest I simply don't care for.
Bottom line: caring about your reputation rating is a little bit like caring about your post count. Doing it demonstrates to everybody else what a sad sack you are.

I would like it if Rep was changed to "Gold Coins" in honor of our good friend, and italian plumber Mario.
It would also be cool if everytime you gave someone +rep you heard "Ching" like when Mario collects a coin. HOORAY!
I'm just being stupid now.

I hate the reputation system. It's worthless. I've elaborated on that several times and I don't feel I need to do it again. Aside from that, I agree with Xantar.
I would like to comment on the access to the Black Project forum. I've been with NDolphin/NDose/GT longer than most, as long as some, and not as long as a small few. And to have a flawed reputation system decide who has access to a forum is perhaps the single most ignorant thing done in all the time I've been with this website. And to me it's a Oxi Moron, because I hate 'Elite Only' forums. It only devides the members of the forums further from each other. But just because I hate it, doesn't mean I don't want access to it. I'll probably never post in there, and yet I'm frustrated by that fact that I couldn't.
Some of you could say "you're only 100 points from having access so quit your whining." But I don't feel I should have to. It's a matter of principle. And one that I feel has been overlooked.

But if everyone can access it, whats stopping people from being complete asses?
Obviously, if you want to post in the Black Project, you need shiney green pips...and obviously to get those shiney green pips you cant be an ass to people and mouth people off.
Benefits keep people acting sane.

You were right on the edge so I pushed you over. It should update your access shortly.
If we implement a new doubloon system, we'll probably have an option to buy access there as well.
In honor of this month of giving, I will +rep anyone who posts in here.

Legitimate feedback on posts is great, but having a visible reputation is unnecessary.
It'd be nice if you could "give people rep," without having a solid figure created by the reputation. It'd be like having an invisible post count.
The figure itself isn't accurate to reputation. It's easy to rep-rally, and post count has a large affect on its value. However, I do admit that positive, personal feedback (and some reasonable constructive criticism) is cool.
Rep wars were hilarious, though. I had my fun.

doesnt really matter if they're visable or not. ANYONE can see who gave them a rep, by using a simple glitch or bug kinda in the way the forum works. its not the most time effective way, but you can see who gave you a rep clear as day.

By visible, I mean having green pips and a number to keep record of how large your reputation is. What should remain visible (and only to the person who receives rep) is the post that received reputation, the positive/negative connotationm, comments, and maybe who gave the reputation.
Having a system to keep track of how much you accumulated reputation is what I feel is unnecessary.

Im saying, like, I never got why people are against the rep thing.
Personally, I like it. It gives me a sense of purpose within the boards. I had to strive to be good, and not stupid, in order to be a P3/P4 and change my custom title, and post in The Black Project.
If you do something wrong, it lets you, and you alone, know who doesnt like what you said. If you do something right, it has the same, positive effect.

I've been around almost as long as you have at the above mentioned forums and have yet to access the oh-so-elusive "Black Project". I remember that I was close one time. Indeed I was, but then we tanked the DBLN system and in came reputation. I remain to this day, after being associated with these people for upwards of 5 years just out of reach of the inner circle.
