THIS IS A RUMOR, BUT A VERY GOOD RUMOR

There are some fun rumors floating around right now concerning wireless gameplay on the Nintendo DS and a "secret" announcement due from Nintendo. First, this is all speculation. Second, if the rumor is true, it would be awesome! So what is the rumor? Well, according to Engadget and various other sources the DS will go well beyond its assumed 802.11 wireless range. The rumors suggest that the DS will be able to act as a repeater hub meaning that an organic network could be established without having to actually be near a wireless hotspot. In other words, a worldwide instant network of gamers.

To add to all of this speculation is a post on GameCubicle.com which seems to suggest various marketing ploys and campaigns for such a feature. The most prominent seems to be the picture of a young boy in the woods holding a Nintendo DS. Going further, it seems that the words, "Find Me" seem to be a big part of this rumored campaign. In addition to the lone boy in the woods, there are images of puppets (marionette) with the words, "Find Me." Think of the word "marionette"....Mario Net? Yes, it would seem a great marketing ploy to suggest that stringed marionettes are the image we'll associate with Mario Net.

Going even further, it seems that in the words, "Find Me," there is a faded "s" after the "d" and before the "M". In other words, "FindsMe" with a faded "s". The middle of that phrase is now "DS".

And, why not add one more myth to this growing story. It seems that there is also a lot of reference to the 15th century explorer, Magellen, who was the first to circumnavigate the globe. Perhaps Nintendo will be suggesting that the DS will be the first network to do the same.

Hmm? Well, it would be quite an amazing feat if Nintendo could pull this off and if it did actually work. Then, you'd have free world-wide long distance in addition to a great gaming platform.

Nintendo revolutionizes online handheld gaming with the most revolutionary online handheld available. Listen to this stuff

Originally, on the N-Sider forums, Dean Bergmann hinted at something BIG to come with the DS in this post:

If you say so

In response to above.. I'll say nothing but this:

You're lost in the woods of a city, and you know there are others there. But how do you know they're there if you're lost? I know the answer.

You'll be playing online anywhere anytime with people around the world.

New marketing campaign says "FIND ME" meaning you can be lost anywhere, and someone can find you using the DS. Call you, pictochat you or play zelda online with you.

if you are lost you can still be found with your ds
It spells anti-isolation on the screen.

The warp pipe guys seems to know a lot about this thing but say Nintendo is responsible.

PUROG is supposed to be an acronym for something .... i dunno: Portable _ _ Online Gaming ... you guys guess

He also posted this hint:

Why Love Bees? Why hide yourself in a dark room and pretend to inflict violence on someone else? Virtual is real?. Real is virtual?

Touch, feel, interact. Unmask yourself! It's not online, it's noline!\

You posted about this before when there were less details and everyone waited anxoiusly for something to happen with the mid-October hint but nothing did happen. All this speculation does it make it fun and it'll be cool if they really do release a tranceiver type deceive for free, worldwide connectivity. I'd like it if Nintendo would just tell us something though. A lot of people are kind of bummed about nothing big being released for DS until around March so at least this make would us owners happier. I won't worry about it too much though, Team Xlink is nearly finished with the DS component of their Kai software so I'll just get if it comes first. The only downside is we'll have to buy a special USB stick type device.

Hmm, those pics came out a little before DS was released. Made by the warp pipe guys when they first announced they would try to get the DS online. Not from Nintendo sadly.

The 'mouth' below the 'eyes' is the DS online tranceiver component.

Im not sure I understand the true potential of this rumor...your saying it could act almost as a mobile phone in terms of being able to connect to anyone anywhere? This dosent seem possible...would you have to be near one of these hubs or what?

Happydude

it acually is very posible, it could work exactly like cell phones, but then you wouldn't really be able to connect from everywhere, just from where you can have a signal, unless of coarse they make the signal stronger. anyway, it would be really awsome if this happened, although how will nintendo set everything up? they would either need to cooperate with mobile communication companies or set their own company just for the DS (which seems unlikly).

anyway...good idea...not enough evidence to support it...yet

I think it's impossible. Cell phone networks cost MONEY. If there's 1 thing Nintendo doesn't want to do, it's pay for a network.

It would be cool if it wasn't all speculation. Unless Nintendo was planning this from the get-go, I doubt that it will take off.

I'm sure it would be a subscription service.

But for someone to find you on a desert island? Laughable. You'd need some GPS hardware for that.
