The problem in some of the 250,000 Xbox's shipped is that the disk drive makes scratches on the perimeter of a game disk.

Microsoft have 200,000 replacement drives. Doesn't seem like good news for them in Japan.

To be fair, all the consoles have had problems soon after their Japanese launch. Heck, I think the PS2 is still having problems, especially with blue discs.

ROFLMAO!!!

I wonder if they're still can achieve the March 14 European launch date!! Would be cool if it would be delayed! :D

(I know, I'm a bit biased towards Nintendo... I just want them to win:))

Ha lol, it reminds me of when PSX came out, they had to update the hardware loads of times coz peoples consoles melted or had to be put sideways or upside down to work. Nintendo have never had such problems because of their quality control systems, perhaps the other companies shold stop rushing to get ahead and take another page from Nintendo's extensve book.

The problem with the PSX was that the original console let the heat out at the bottom of the console. This ment that if the console was left on for a long time on a carpet floor, it could cause the carpet to set a light.

To be fair, we don't know if Nintendo's consoles have never had problems in the past (well someone might). But they do have more experience with manufacturing consoles, but everyone has to learn from there mistakes.

But back to the subject, i'm not sure if this will make a great difference to X-BOX's success. It's weather the Japanese want the games or not.

Yeah true, true and if Microsoft are taking them back and returning new versions free of charge then this will probably make Japanese gamers happy, especially if they get some kind of compensation.

Well, i kinda dought that Microsoft will dish out compensation, i mean thats 250 000 people, but i do think that they will do it for free, i mean, they better! Otherwise it would piss alot of people off.

Errr well usually when there's a big recall, the company or something other than the consumers pay for the repairs...

Not to mention, wouldn't all those Xboxs still be under warranty anyways?

I dont mean compensation as in ££££ $$$$...... (how do you do that bloody yen symbol) I mean like, discount vouchers or a free exclusive demo CD or something.

This is not good news for the XBox in Japan. Japanese people are hesitant to buy an American electronics product in the first place, now the XBox might become a running joke in Japan. I can't believe that MS would allow this to happen in Japan. They should have been EXTRA careful with the quality of their Japanese consoles. If the MS QC Manager isn't gone yet, he should be.

True. I would post a link, but it's in IGNInsider's most recent Japan update.

Puppet is correct, there was never and will never be a official Xbox recall in Japan. This just goes to show you that the videogame media has once again blown everything out of proportion.

Let’s see the real facts:

http://www.xengamers.com/sections/news/6734/

"Albeit available in Japan for less than a month, Microsoft's Xbox has been besieged with negative press. More unfortunate however, much of the criticism has resulted from a misunderstanding regarding hardware defects affecting less than 1 percent of all Japanese consoles. Painted into a proverbial corner, Microsoft's Japanese director Hirohisa Oura has taken the offensive. Specifically, he recently agreed to answer some daunting questions regarding Microsoft's strategy for the Japanese market and the Xbox overall."

Microsoft is actually ending up being the nice guy here. Even if your Japanese Xbox is not defective they are still willing to replace the drivers free of charge.
