It doesn't look like Pictochat is going to be the only application from Nintendo on the DS.

According to a Japanese newspaper called Sankei Shimbun, Nintendo are developing a new touch-screen virtual dictionary/translator.

The translator is reported to be able to translate:

English-Japanese
English-Chinese
Japanese-Chinese

Not only will the application be a dicitonary and translator, but Sankei Shimbun also comment on there being other features including various mini games. Satoru Iwata is targetting the product at students in both high and middle schools and he also noted "Although it is practical as a dictionary, it has several functions".

Whether this product will be released in US or Europe we have yet to find out, but it certainly sounds like a promising piece of kit.

looks like that'll be ....lots of fun!!!

actually I heard this will be part of the "internet" with pictochat like features but cross languages... as well as integrating a "voice translator" with the microphone... just a rumor, but wouldn't that be freaking awesome as hell?!?

This sounds really cool. Nintendo has always been looking for a way to bridge the gap between the Mighty U.S. and our neighbors in the land of the rising sun. Thanks to Nintendo, different language speaking teens can be friends or romantic partners.

...and hopefully this means Nintendo isn't taking its sweet time getting online.
